Gypsy Moth Caterpillar - Lymantria dispar
I was eager to get on the internet and identify this jazzy looking backyard visitor. Was surprised when I figured out what it was. I remember these as looking much duller - like the plague or death itself. For those not from the northeast or too young to remember, these things wreaked havoc on this area three decades ago. They marched in and completely stripped large sections of forest during two consecutive summers. They made entire areas look like January in July. The deciduous trees then rebudded and we had April in September. The big shock came when they had stripped all the leaves and then turned to the conifers, stripping all the needles from them and killing them. That hadn't been observed before and changed the face of thousand of acres for decades.
