This was my first time shooting a mantis and focusing on the head took me by surprise. I usually concentrate on getting the eyes in focus, as that is the most important detail. Mantis have what appears to be a distinct pupil in their eyes, so I initially focused to resolve the pupils as sharp spots. These pupils are deep inside the eyes, so focusing on them puts the focused field well behind the face. Instead I decided to pick the faceted surface of the eye to focus on and let the pupils go fuzzy. The face is so long that I needed a two exposure stack to sharply resolve everything from the tip of the nose to the base of the antenna.
